For over three decades Florence Cox has been an integral part of numerous community based organizations in Chicago. She currently serves as President of We Can, Inc. a community based organization comprised of business owners and educators. She is also Chairman of the Appeals Committee, a sub-committee of the Illinois Business Enterprise Advisory Council.
Since becoming a Chicago, Illinois resident, she has served with Black Contractors United, Inc. (Executive Director) a contractors organization that consisted of approximately 200 members , Illinois PTA (Chicago Representative), Chicago Region PTA (President), U.S. Department of Education (Grant Review Committee), Hyde Park Kenwood Community Conference Schools Committee (Chairperson), Chicago Teachers Pension Fund (Trustee) and the Chicago Board of Education where she held the title of President of the Chicago Board of Education.

While serving on the Board of Education, Florence assisted in the management of a 2.5 billion dollar budget, 600 public schools, 41,000 employees, negotiated with 24 unions and chaired the Chicago Teachers Pension Fund Investment Committee for the 5.5 billion dollar Chicago Teachers Union Pension Fund.
Florence graduated from Norfolk State University where she earned a B.A. Degree in English with a minor in French. She has earned certificates from numerous entities including but not limited to The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania - Fundamentals of Money Management and Roosevelt University, Graduate Level Certificate (Lawyers Assistance Program-Corporations and Securities).
In addition to years of volunteerism on behalf of education and social issues, Florence taught high school English and French and served as an Education Specialist at the Chicago Urban League. She recently completed service as a member of the Illinois Tollway Strategic Advisory Committee.
She has received numerous awards for her many years of service. She and Emory Cox are the parents of two daughters, Kimberly and Sherri.
